Garden: Writing about week three in week five

They're in the ground! Two weekends ago I stopped by my friend Scott's backyard to install four of the squash sprouts, the three bean sprouts that made it, all ten of the radishes and a cucumber seedling that I bought at the Ballard Sunday market. The beans and radishes are in a more shady spot - I don't know how the beans will do, but I think if the radishes outgrown their legginess they'll be OK since they like it a little colder anyway. The squash is in the sunnier corner of their garden plot in between Nicole's garlic and Scott's potatoes (good company!).

I haven't visited them since then, but Scott says nothing has died and that the radishes are actually doing better than expected. Good! Nothing better than a cool radish salad in Summer, which appears to finally arrived on the longest day of the year.

I repotted the one squash seedling that got left behind in a 2-liter soda bottle and it is growing merrily away on my east-facing windowsill. I'm not sure if the planter has enough room for it to totally mature but I guess we'll see.

Garden: Day 15

All of the squash sprouts are up and more bean sprouts have finally made an appearance. The radishes are looking really leggy and they need to go outside soon if it's not too late already. The Squash are even putting out a second set of leaves, they'll be ready for the outdoors in a few days, too.

Garden: Almost two weeks

It's day 10 and the radishes are going crazy, most of the squash is sprouted and one intrepid bean sprout is working its way up as well. The other beans are stubbornly hanging back and I think I want to find some lemon cucumber seeds to start as well.

Green Thumb? We Shall See...

I really like my apartment. It has a washer and drier in the unit, a dishwasher and garbage disposal, good natural light, a fireplace and space for my stuff. But it does not have a balcony. That's OK: my rent is lower than other units in the building and since I'm on the first floor it keeps my unit marginally secure. But it also means that I can't really have a garden. Yeah, there's a communal roof deck, but I just don't really trust my neighbors not to destroy my plants. Enter my awesome co-graduates (coworkers? classmates? kinda a mix of both?). Some of them rent a big house with a big backyard and they're letting me take over an empty plot in their garden! So I set about getting some seedlings started: yellow squash, bush beans and watermelon radishes (all heirloom). They all recommend not planting until it stays above 50F at night, and Seattle isn't quite there yet so I've started them inside and will probably transplant in a week or two. Here's the progress:

Day 0: got decomposable planters so I can directly transplant most of my seedlings.

Day 3: First sign of life! Congratulations, it's a radish sprout!

Day 5: Now the radishes are really growing.

Day 7: First squash and bean sprouts makes their appearance.
