Yesterday was a very busy day. My tuition balance has remained stubbornly out-of-state for this quarter and I was just a tad worried that my entire fellowship check was going to go straight to UW Regents. I found out that isn't the case - the department will pay my tuition regardless, but they really, really would like me to get residency so they don't have to spend so much out of their grants, and I'm all for it. I haven't really considered the hoops you have to jump through to get in-state tuition until now:
For one year, you must
-be financially independent
-sever all legal ties to your old state (get a WA driver's license, bank account, voter registration, car registration and insurance, health insurance, domicile).
-not be here primarily for education purposes (but grad students can get a waiver for this)
So yesterday I got my WA driver's license, registered to vote and opened a checking account. My health coverage through the graduate appointee insurance plan of UW starts Oct.1 and all I have left to do is change the tabs on the car and get insurance for that. Then wait a year...
